The county seat is located in the largest city in the county - Yankton (population 15,411).

The only third-party company South Dakota authorizes to order vital records (birth certificates, death certificates, marriage certificates) is at VitalChek with an option to order online using a credit card.
Fees for S.D. vital records are $15.00 per copy (ordered from the County Register of Deeds office) and $26.50 (ordered through Vital Chek) or $44.00 (ordered through Vital Chek with overnight shipping).
