Yankton County, established in 1862, is located along the southern border of South Dakota along the Missouri River. The county encompasses a total area of 533 square miles with a population of 23,310 (2020 US Census estimate).

The primary industries in the county are agriculture, manufacturing, and services.

The county seat is located in the largest city in the county - Yankton (population 15,411).

The Yankton County Weed Department would like to remind that Yankton County landowners are required to control noxious weeds on their property. The Weed Department will begin their inspections on May 1, 2026.

A reminder to all residents that the first half of property taxes is due by April 30th. There are several convenient ways to pay. You can pay in person, by mail, by our secure drop box or you can pay on-line. For more information please see the Treasurer's page under the Departments tab or call our office.
